“My piano player told me that hundreds of years ago the raised fifth was the Devil’s note. “And it’s why, in the early part of the twentieth century, my grandparents were angry with my folks for liking big-band and swing. “I suppose I was too young to admit that I knew what sex was, but that’s the reason people across the world fell in love with Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry,” she smiles. Raitt was also attracted to the rebellious aspect of the early days of rock’n’roll. Even Ray Charles’s interpretation of country music always appealed to me. “I tend to like the funkier aspect of it. “Rhythm and blues, and the blues itself,” she notes.
Sometimes the critics get it, sometimes they don’t.”ĭespite Raitt’s wide-ranging interests, there are common musical themes running through her music, So I just make records for my peers, my fans and me. “And I couldn’t change it even if I tried. “I always thought it was a strong point, myself,” she adds. Nick Of Time features the same kind of material as I had on my first album, but after twenty years people thought it was a worthwhile thing to be eclectic, so I’m proud to have people like it. I appreciate that people do get like that. “They said I should stick to one kind of music. “In the early days a lot of people said it was a problem because you couldn’t pigeon-hole me,” she laughs. And it all began way back in the early 70s when she released her debut album. Although primarily an interpreter of other people’s music, it is her desire to dabble in different styles – blues, country, soul, rock’n’roll, you name it – that has made her such an engaging artist. A lot of the camp counsellors were caught up in the folk music revival that was sweeping the East Coast, things like the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary, plus The Weavers and Pete Seeger.
“And then I used to go off to summer camp when my dad would be on tour this would have been in the late fifties or early sixties, when I was nine or ten. My grandparents were also musical, which set me off in that direction. My two brothers and I grew up in a musical household. I had a musician mom who played great piano, and a father who became a musical director he sang all the time. “My dad was the original leading man in Carousel, and he was in a show called The Pajama Game, which was big in the fifties. “I was raised in a musical family my folks were part of the Broadway music scene,” she begins.
